Flopsy’s adventure…

This is going to be difficult for me to write as it’s still all very fresh in my mind and upsetting for me…

It was a bright, warm Sunday afternoon and me and my mum decided to take Flopsy outside for a while in the front garden (he’s mostly an indoor bunny). We have a makeshift pen for him until we get something better, and it’s never usually an issue because we’re both watching him. Well, today something landed on my head. I thought it was a sticky bud or something like that and reached to remove it – I was stung on the thumb and ended up throwing it to the ground. When I looked I saw it was a bee. I was destracted by the pain, and my mum wanted to try and put the bee somewhere safer. In this short lapse of time, Flopsy escaped from his pen and ran towards the back garden.

Thinking he’d stop I ran after him. He didn’t stop. We have a large grass area just outside our garden which he ran straight across, and my calls weren’t enough to get him to turn back. I eventually caught up with him somewhat in patches of tall grass, but then he snuck into someones garden. My mum caught up and we were looking for him but we’d lost him from our sight.

I can’t say for sure if it was worry over what would happen to him, or because of my injury and trying to hurry after him, or because of the sting, but I ended up dropping to the floor and throwing up while my mum kept looking for him. In my case “sick to the stomach” really was true.

Recently I’ve been reading a fantastic eBook all about bunnies, and when we couldn’t see him it made me think of something written about in it. Apparently a lot of people “free” domesticated rabbits into the wild, where they come to a cruel end by starvation, being scared to death, predator attacks or being run over. I was terrified this would happen to Flopsy.

All of this was making me very ill and so I came home thinking I’d never see him again. I sat on my bed and cried. My sister went to help my mum go look but I really thought there was no chance. In my head I planned a reward in case he was found, but I still felt it unlikely. So many dangers…

…and then they came home. My sister came in my room, with Flopsy in her arms. She handed him over and I held him for the longest time. He wasn’t hurt or injured in any way, and seems no worse for his little adventure. Little does he know that he gave me the biggest scare of my life!

My sister said she saw him laid under a bush, in the shade in a garden. They asked the person if she could go in and get him and of course they said yes. Luckily their dog wasn’t there at that time.

I’m just so relieved that he’s back home, safe and well. I’m also so thankful to my wonderful sister and mum for searching for him and finding him. I really thought my next post here would be one of sadness and sorrow.

Suffice to say he won’t be going outside again until the pen is upgraded from makeshift to unescapable. No more adventures for Flopsy!

Glad you got him back! I had a similar scare once… While bringing my dog to my mom’s friend’s house he ran down the drive way, across the road and around the corner. He’s terrified of the friend’s house for some reason (some cats attacked him one day lol) so he ran as soon as I put him down.

I ran after him and was pretty angry, guess that’s how I react to things like that. My doggie was more scared than I was because he ended up crapping all over the place… haha :/

But I caught up to him, he knew he did something wrong, then I took him back to the house to get his butt washed. ^____^

Like you needed to know all that, but you know me.

Cat – I am glad they can’t! I’ll never be able to thank or repay you enough for getting my beautiful boy back!

Anonymous – That is pretty damn scary! Poor thing… but I can understand why you’d get mad. Sometimes it’s relief because of the situation or to make sure they know never to do it again. Me, I just cried all over Flopsy. He wouldn’t have paid attention if I’d have shouted at him anyway.
