One year older!

February 11th, 2008

Today was my 23rd birthday and, overall, it was pretty damn good. As always my parents and sister pulled out all the stops to give me a special day and I can’t thank them enough for that. Although I didn’t expect anything I got plenty of lovely cards and presents that I’m excited about sharing with anyone interested enough about my life to read my blog.

RIP John

January 22nd, 2008

On Thursday morning a boy I knew from school (from 5 years old to 18 I guess it was) died in a car accident. By chance I was taking a look at groups my friends had joined on Facebook over the following weekend, and there was one dedicated to his memory. Within minutes I had found out the very tragic news.

Bye bye ads!

January 9th, 2008

As mentioned in a previous post, this blog has had Google Ads running down the side of certain pages. They weren’t huge or distracting, however, I removed them today.

I initially wanted to see how much money I could get back from my website and the answer is “not a lot”, at least, not through that method. I’m not very keen on ads anyway and I really don’t receive the traffic to warrant having them so I’m just not going to bother.

I will keep the donation link available as I do sometimes get a bit of money here and there through it (and a huge thank you to those who have donated in the past!), and I will also keep referral links up as they are worth promoting, but the ads just need to go.

Belated Seasons Greetings!

January 9th, 2008

For the past few months I’ve had a lot on my mind and I’ve been reluctant to put it into words, hence my sporadic blog posts as of late. Nonetheless, I do intend to write more soon… catching anyone up who is interested on my 2007 and what I hope for 2008.

Right now I just want to wish that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, with all the best for the months to come. I myself had a great time celebrating with my parents and sister – and of course Flopsy.

Speaking of which, my lack of talking about him doesn’t mean that anything is wrong with the wascally wabbit, he is doing very well in fact. I have a lot of pictures to upload and post, but I’m looking for a camera lead so I can do that. Until then, take my word that he is okay and that his two year old Birthday came and went without a problem.

We’ll leave it at that for now but I’ll be posting soon! :-D

58,750 Unread Emails

January 5th, 2008

Something made me decide to check my website domain’s unused default email account. I was surprised to see that it had used up 286.77Mb of space. That’s a lot when I’ve never given it out to anyone. So, I decided to log in and actually look at what was taking up so much… Exactly 58,750 unread emails were waiting for me – all unwanted.

Staying here!

January 4th, 2008

After a lot of thought I decided to transfer webhosts. I did move my blog yesterday and got in touch with my host to have my account cancelled, however the owner of Honest Networks gave me the option to pay later rather than now as I’ve been a customer for a long time. Weighing up the pros and cons I would much prefer to stay where I am and use my other hosting account for unrelated projects.

I’m not sure what makes me more happy. Don’t get me wrong, I am extremely pleased that I don’t need to downgrade or that I won’t have to spend ages fixing broken links and getting people used to a new website address… But perhaps even better than that is the trust put into me by a relative stranger.

This is such a relief – one less thing to worry about for a little while.

Lebara Mobile

December 4th, 2007

Introduced to the UK at the end of October this year, Lebara Mobile is one of the latest mobile providers to reach the UK shores… and it’s given me reason to be excited about that.

Lebara specializes in low cost international calls and that’s exactly what it offers, along with reasonable national rates and text messaging besides. Although this sim-only service is mainly presented as an ideal way for people from ethnic communities to call loved ones living in other countries, I too am interested because of the friends I’ve made across the globe over the years.

I really hope this company does well here as this is just the kind of service I’ve been looking for and I can’t wait to sign up with them later this week.

Should I stay or should I go?

November 30th, 2007

My webspace is up for renewal in January, and I have a difficult decision to make. Do I stay with them or do I move what I have to my free (it comes with my paid email address at no extra charge) host?

Here is what I’ve facing starting with what my present host (Honest Networks) offers and then what my free host (Runbox Web Hosting) offers by comparison.

Honest Networks – Runbox Web Hosting
DirectAdmin Panel – cPanel
10,000MB space – 200MB space
150GB bandwidth – 4GB bandwidth
3 MySQL databases – 5 MySQL databases
$30 for 6 months – free with my email

They both have a lot of other features besides those listed, but these are the main ones I’m interested in and so have focused on.

In a way it seems obvious that I should stay with my present host because of the space and bandwidth I’m offered, but I really don’t use that much of it and, if I combined the free host with another free host (ironically owned by the company that own my present host) then I could get away with “sizing down”. I don’t really want to, but money is an issue right now. Then again, it’s a big inconvenience to haul everything from one place to another…

I guess I have a month to figure this out. *sigh*

The Tuttles Madcap Misadventures: Starlight Charity Challenge

November 29th, 2007

I love games and I love to help people so when I read that there is a downloadable PC game that has been specifically made to raise money for the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, I just had to post about it here.

Pidgin.im

November 28th, 2007

I haven’t written about a piece of software in two years! Unbelievable, especially considering there is so much out there worth discussing. And so I break from my silence to talk about Pidgin, a instant messenger… with a difference.
